Learning baby sign - where do I start?

Baby sign language is really easy to learn:

  • Look through our Video Sign Guide (our baby signing dictionary) and choose the baby signs most relevant to you – many babies quickly pick up the sign for ‘milk’ and ‘more’. Read more on first steps.
  • Watch the videos several times until you feel comfortable with the baby signs – each baby sign is shown from different angles to show you how easily they are formed.
  • Read the written tutorials that accompany each baby sign video – they will also highlight the handshapes used to make the baby signs, which are based on British Sign Language (BSL) and the importance of facial expressions.
  • Use the signs wherever and whenever you can and speak the words at the same time – and they’ll soon pick it up!
  • Encourage other people who are around the children to learn the same signs from our free online video guide (carers, grandparents, nursery teachers, baby sitters) and this will make learning easier for your baby and so much more fun!
  • Use the baby signs constantly when talking to your baby, until s/he starts using them.
  • Gradually introduce more baby signs – but don’t forget to keep repeating the signs your baby has already learned.
