10 tips to successful baby sign

We asked mums and dads who are using baby sign for their top tips. And not surprisingly, they came up with the same advice which the experts gave us.

If you put these into practice, you can't go far wrong!

  1

Don't try to start too early. It's important to go at your baby's rate and look to them for the right time to start.

  2

Don't try to teach too many signs at once - and don't alter them even if your baby initially gets them wrong.

  3

Start with a sign your baby is interested in. Lots of babies quickly pick up the sign for 'milk'.

  4

Make signing part of your daily ritual - do it every day once you have started.

  5

Make sure you have eye contact with your baby when you use a sign.

  6

Say and sign the word at the same time so that your baby learns the connection.

  7

Repetition is the name of the game. Use the word as often as you can.

  8

Be patient. Babies all develop at their own pace, so don't give up.

  9

Teach close family and friends the signs you are using, so that your baby can be understood and isn't confused with invented signs.

  10

Make it fun! As with all learning, it's easier if it's enjoyable.
