Moving towards speech

There will come a time when your growing baby finds it much easier and more convenient to learn a new word rather than a new sign.

As early speech develops into structured language, baby sign ceases to be a potent means of communication.

Their focus of attention changes, very often to things they are playing with. And once they are playing, their hands are no longer free to make signs.

At this time, the signs which your baby has mastered may become redundant and little by little will be forgotten.

You may still see glimpses of them though, particularly at moments of tiredness.

Whether you keep up the interest or let it lapse, learning it will have been really worthwhile for you, your baby and the family.
