Learning baby sign

Next steps:

Learn more words

Once your baby has learnt the first few words, you can go on together to use more - many babies learn 50 words and more.

Parents often find that there's a core of early words which are useful at home. They usually revolve around the basic pattern of daily life - eating, drinking, sleeping, nappy, bath time.

Once these have been mastered, you can move easily on to words which help describe the wider world which your baby starts to experience - books, animals, colours, interesting objects which move, like cars and aeroplanes, and some first words about emotions like 'happy' and 'sad'.

Babies also quickly identify the key people in their lives - mum, dad, brother, sister.

And as they grow, they develop a sense of place - of places they like, like the park and garden, house or bed.

There are over 100 words in our basic A-Z video vocabulary - but they're not in any order of priority. Choose the ones which best match your baby's needs and interests.

As you build on your baby's vocabulary, don't forget to keep using the signs which have already been learned. If not, they can soon be forgotten!
