Learning baby sign

Getting Ready:

Useful first signs

Baby sign is a combination of simple hand shapes, clear facial expressions and body movement. And the starting point is a few simple words.

These key words are likely to be most useful early on - according to parents who've used baby sign. You don't need to teach your baby all these words. And there may be others in the video dictionary which you want to introduce instead.

As babies make sense of the world, they start off with simple communication concepts which meet their needs.

So it's important to keep signing simple. Don't try to introduce too many signs at once. Start off with half a dozen at the most and then gradually add to them.

Only when your baby has mastered a few signs should you introduce more. Choose words that are going to be most relevant to baby's daily life and things that interest your infant - like a person (mum, dad) or a pet (dog/cat).

Don't try to start too early. It's important to go at your baby's rate and look to them for the right time to start
