Learning baby sign

First steps:

The basics

The right word for the right time

The ideal moment to introduce new words is in a natural situation, when your baby is playing or exploring something new. Meal times are ideal for words like milk, more, drink and 'All gone'. The words bath, bed and sleep sit naturally together. Make sure you have your baby's attention and that s/he is in the mood and not too tired!

Sound and sign

Always say and sign the word at the same time. Remember that signing is not meant to replace language. In time, your baby will come to associate the sound of a word with the sign which you use. Try to keep background noise to a minimum.

Facial expression

Make sure you use clear, lively facial expressions. Establish and try to keep eye contact - make your eyes 'big' by raising your eyebrows. Babies react to animated faces and clear gestures - they find the movement and the attention stimulating.
