Learning baby sign

Getting Ready:

How old should my baby be?

Sorry, but there's no right or wrong answer! The ideal time to introduce a few signs is when your baby starts trying to communicate with you.

Some child experts suggest that anywhere between 6-9 months old is a good starting point. Others suggest that 8-10 months may be better.

If you start before your baby is six months old, it's unlikely that you'll see any signs repeated back to you immediately. Your baby's hand and eye co-ordination is still developing.

But many parents report that their baby may suddenly start using several signs all at once, as if the brain has suddenly made sense of what you have been teaching.

In the end, though, all babies are different. Parents have a natural instinct for when their baby is ready to learn something new. As with talking, it does no harm to start early. And it's never too late to start signing!
