Eating your placenta - food for thought?

Some mothers say it has great health benefits, but could you really stomach eating your placenta after you’ve given birth?
Many mothers do, but if the thought of consuming the organ makes you feel sick to the stomach, a midwife may just have the answer – take it as a pill instead!
For £175, Poole midwife Caroline Baddiley will cook and grind that placenta into a powder which is then put into a capsule and swallowed.
Caroline said: “The placenta is a rich source of hormones and chemicals and it’s thought that by preserving it, some of those factors can go back to the mother.
“Taking it in capsule form is certainly more appealing and palatable than the alternative. My customers don’t have to handle it or smell or taste it at all”.
The idea of turning a woman’s placenta into a pill was first introduced two years ago by American Lynnea Shrief of the Placenta Encapsulation Network, and it’s claimed that eating placenta can replenish depleted iron levels, increase the production of breast milk and can help to prevent post natal depression.
