About BSL

ITV BabySign and BSL

ITV BabySign is based - quite deliberately - on the UK's fourth indigenous language - British Sign Language (BSL).

BSL was recognised as a language in its own right by the UK government in March 2003.

Literally hand-crafted over the centuries, sign languages are used worldwide by millions of deaf and hearing people.

By standardising the use of BSL for baby sign, people are less likely to get confused about the meaning of any given sign. Everyone who is in contact with your baby can repeat the same sign and help them to learn more quickly.

Any signs used by your baby can be understood by those who know BSL - a group which includes many health professionals.

If you're interested in learning BSL, go to www.signature.org.uk to find where there is an accredited class near you.
